'Opposites Attract'
Say hello to a Friend of Mine - the debut label from Melbourne designer Teale Talbot. Sexy, confident and just a little bit tough; Friend of Mine blends feminine edge with a relaxed look that a girl can make her own.
Entitled Opposites Attract, Teale's first collection embraces contradiction and unexpected subtleties. A tough exterior is achieved with the appearance of studs, leather, feminised biker boots and feature zips. This raw appeal is juxtaposed with softened pieces such as floaty dresses and tiered sculptured tops. Bloc splashes of neon pink, orange and blue are seen alongside monochromatic white and black in various textures.
The label is inspired by time spent in urban capital New York as well as bohemian beach town Byron Bay. The result is a beach-meets-grunge attitude achieved with washed denim pieces and cropped jersey tops. A rockabilly aesthetic is referenced throughout and is seen in the label's namesake, which is drawn from a cult Bob Dylan track. The look is one that is undeniably fashionable, yet in a thrown together style that is far from contrived.
The cyclical nature of fashion is highlighted throughout with the reinvention of vintage pieces. Fashion, Teale notes, "is all about interpretation". Her own manipulation of past fashion is seen through the collection. This was achieved, she explains, by "deconstructing and modernising vintage pieces by removing details, therefore making them understated". Thus, old ideas are drawn upon and made relevant for today's woman.
Chosen materials such as jersey, cotton and silk result in shapes which flatter the female form without clinging. The style embraces a comfortable and relaxed look that is to be worn with a natural confidence. Unexpected details - such as cut out shapes, asymmetrical draping and sequin detailing - adorn basic pieces and transform them in to something new.
The collection is accompanied by an assortment of accessories that stand alone when mixed with basics or complete a styled look. Tough wedge boots, tomboy leather backpacks and studded beanies are complimented with relaxed sandals available in black, grey and orange.
Friend of Mine is available in select boutiques nationally from July.
